Meet the Team
James Carlson
Founder
James Carlson is a lifelong entrepreneur whose journey began at 18 when he started a landscaping business with little more than determination and a willingness to work hard. The road wasn't always easy. In the early years, he once pawned the title to his vehicle to make payroll—a challenge that reinforced the resilience, faith, and perseverance that continue to guide him today.
Over the years, James founded and grew several businesses in Springfield, including District Square, Lakeview Manor Senior Living, Carlson & Riggs Funeral Home, and The Market—a place where local artisans, makers, and entrepreneurs can showcase their work and grow their businesses. Known for his tireless work ethic and hands-on leadership, James is often found working alongside his team rather than directing from the sidelines. His commitment to Springfield extends beyond business through service on the boards of Effingham Health System and the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.
James believes the greatest legacy isn't measured by the businesses you build, but by the people you invest in. He hopes The Onyx will become a lasting gift to Springfield—a place that continues to strengthen families, equip future generations, and serve the community for decades to come.
Stephanie Santos
Director of Operations
Born in the Philippines, Stephanie Santos immigrated to the United States at age five and grew up on a houseboat in the Mississippi bayous. Armed with a Christian education and surrounded by teachers and mentors who challenged her, Stephanie knows her journey was shaped by the people who opened doors—and the determination to walk through them.
Service has been a constant throughout Stephanie's life. While building a 30-year corporate career in strategic communications, marketing, and community engagement, she volunteered with churches, veterans' organizations, and local nonprofits. As an American Red Cross volunteer, she interviewed veterans for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, helping preserve their stories for future generations. Today, Stephanie serves as Nonprofit Director of Operations for The Onyx, helping transform a vision for stronger families and communities into meaningful programs, partnerships, and opportunities to serve.
She believes every person has God-given potential and that the right encouragement, opportunity, and perseverance can change the course of a life. Today, she has the privilege of helping create those opportunities for others.
